The 5.4 makes it's power down low with more torque and the 5.0 makes it's power up high with more hp. The 5.0 gets better mpg by a bit but not earth shattering. Both seem to be dependable.I sell and operate Ford vehicles so here's my opinion. First, both are reliable engines, however the 5.0 is more well known and produces a much better sound. But here's why you probably should go with the 2.7.
